Grade 4 Play Explores Virginia—The Wonder Years
10/4/2013
The fourth-grade actors and actresses combined their stage skills with a historical mystery in the BlackBox theatre production of Virginia—The Wonder Years. Written and directed by Monica Moehring, this play dealt with the first English colony attempted in the New World, Roanoke Island, and the unknown details about its eventual disappearance. The play was broken into three segments, each dealing with a chapter in the colonization saga. Mrs. Moehring wrote the play to be like a television show, including commercials and a theme song to the tune of “Gilligan’s Island.” All the famous characters were there, including the Queen, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Sir Francis Drake, as the mystery unraveled throughout each scene. As history has shown, however, there was no succinct conclusion to what happened on Roanoke Island, and the students seemed to enjoy knowing they were in charge of delivering a mysterious tale. The advertisements for Folgers Coffee and Mattel’s “Chatty Cathy” doll were hilarious additions to the entertainment. Congratulations to the fourth graders for a job well done!
