MLK Bell Ringing
Fourteen Upper School choral and theatre students joined churches, schools, and groups from across the nation with special bell-ringing, as they marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech on Waddell Terrace on Wednesday, August 28. Music teacher Bonnie Anderson and theatre teacher Craig Smith led their students in a beautiful and informal bell-ringing at exactly 3 p.m. for a full minute to recognize the moment of Dr. King’s speech 50 years ago.
The idea came from WNYC, New York City’s public radio station, who encouraged people via the Internet to gather at churches, schools, and historical monuments to mark the anniversary with a bell-ringing. Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Smith decided to bring their eighth-period classes to the Terrace to mark the occasion and "let freedom ring."
Lower School families driving through the carpool lane during that time were treated to a beautiful noise, and The Steward School is proud to have marked a significant day in our country’s history.
