Accelerated Reader Assembly
AR Assembly: "A Good Book is Your Ticket to Travel"
9/26/2013
The whole world was opened up to Lower School students on Wednesday at the Accelerated Reader (AR) Assembly. This event officially kicks off the reading program for Lower School with a fun theme every year—this year’s theme is A World Full of Reading. Fourth-grade teacher Chris Tickle was a one-man musical who showed “student” Mary Ann Taylor (first-grade teacher in disguise) how books could open up the entire world in her imagination. Mr. Tickle played a “Literary Travel Agent” who took Mrs. Taylor on a magic carpet ride to every continent on the globe, introducing her to the adventures she could find in books.
Mr. Tickle adapted the lyrics to three popular songs to get the Lower School students excited about reading. He sang variations of the One Direction song “The Best Song Ever” and “A Whole New World” from Aladdin, and he even successfully tapped his way through “Cups” with book-oriented lyrics. Lower School teachers Suzanne Casey, Betty Enright, Beverley Fox, Katherine Goodpasture, Becky Groves, Bonny Hajek, Susan Holt, Kathy Karmolinski, Katy Koppanyi, and Nancy Loyd also participated as characters from around the globe who teased Mrs. Taylor to entice her to read their exciting books.
At the conclusion of the assembly, Lower School Librarian Mrs. Enright told the students that there are more than 190,000 AR tests available for earning points toward their goals, so almost any book they want to read should qualify. The AR program is open to grades 1-5 and runs through the school year. Students who earn the required number of points for their grades will earn prizes and possibly the privilege of standing on stage for the final AR Assembly in May.
